We all avoid situations that cause us grief, pain, or even a slight amount of discomfort. For 5 years, I have avoided attending church on Mother’s Day. For 5 years, I have attended baby showers cautiously and gingerly. For half a decade, I have been afraid.
…Afraid to allow myself to be broken or experience pain.
We all do it. There are times when protecting ourselves is the highest priority. For the past few years, the circumstances pushing me toward avoidance have been overwhelming. But, today I’m willing to put on my big girl pants, and be brave.
In 10 minutes, I’m leaving for my first Mother’s Day service in 5 years. There are a couple of great kids that are singing in the service today, and being there to support them is more important than avoiding the pain. Let’s see how this goes.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.
